Health Department authorities in southern Nevada are notifying approximately 40,000 patients who underwent medical treatment at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada, 700 Shadow Lane, Las Vegas, Nevada, between March 2004 and January 2008 of possible exposure to Hepatitis and HIV. After six people were diagnosed with acute cases of Hepatitis C since January, the health district began an investigation which revealed unsafe injection practices had exposed patients to the blood of other patients.

The unsafe injection practices cited in the investigation refer to the clinic's reuse of syringes and single dose vials of anesthesia medication in colonoscopies and other gastrointestinal procedures. Health officials said that, "the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada is a high-volume gastrointestinal practice where colonoscopies are frequently performed. Reuse of syringes and vials at the facility was a "common practice" undertaken by everyone from doctors to technicians."

Patients who were treated at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada should be tested for Hepatitis C, B and HIV as soon as possible. Health officials also warned patients treated at the clinic to practice safe sex and use condoms until test results confirm the patient has not contracted a blood-born virus.
