What should I do after an auto accident?
Your right to recover for your injuries maybe affected by the action taken or not taken following an accident. First, the needs of the injured must be attended to. An ambulance should be summoned if appropriate. You also need to gather as much information as possible about the accident. Witnesses should be located; the police should be called to the accident scene to complete a report. If by some reason the police do not investigate the accident, drivers should exchange insurance information and promptly go to the police station and fill out a report. If you are injured in any way you should go to a hospital emergency room as soon as possible. You should also consult with your family doctor. Visible injuries such as cuts or bruises should be photographed. What about attorney’s fees?
At the Richard Harris Law Firm we offer a free consultation to discuss the details of your case. We will also explain the attorneys fees and cost which would apply. When we represent you; the type of fee utilized is a contingency fee. A contingency fee is a percentage of the amount recovered in your behalf. Most often our fee is one third of the amount we collect for you. This may vary depending on complexity of the case, the time involved or the likelihood of settlement as opposed to an arbitration hearing or trial. There are several advantages to a contingency fee. You’re not required to make any payment up front or as the case progresses. We get paid when the case gets settled. Our firm gets paid when you get paid. In the unlikely event your case is unsuccessful, you owe us no fees. Also advanced are our costs which are the out of pocket expenses necessary to present your case. Costs may include charges for the accident report, doctor’s report and court filing fees. By law any costs advanced by our firm remain the responsibility of the client or are deducted from your part of the settlement proceeds at the successful conclusion of the case.
