Distracted driving has become a big problem. In fact, as many as 20-25% of all accidents now are caused by distracted driving. I recently had a case involving a tragic death of a father and husband who was simply riding his bicycle in the bike lane when a young driver simply went to adjust the radio volume and the car drifted to the right and struck the bicycle driver from behind and killed him. This family lost their father, they lost their husband, and this young lady has to bear the guilt and live with the fact that she took a life.
It's a terrible situation, but we need to view the driving of a vehicle as a tremendous, big responsibility that requires our undivided attention at all times. We take distracted driving very serious at the Richard Harris Law Firm. And there are a couple of things that we've done here at the law firm to try to bring more awareness to this problem of distracted driving.
Every year with the Clark County school district, we sponsor a public service announcement contest where students are asked to prepare video presentations in a 30 second format showing some of the tragedies that can occur with distracted driving or drunk driving or other safety issues involving motor vehicles. It's been very successful in bringing awareness to this problem among the high school students and among the general public at large, because the winner of that contest commercial that is prepared is then presented by us at our expense on television as our public service announcement and awareness to the public to bring more attention to the problem.
The other thing that we do is: We give away these wristbands, which say “I don't text and drive,” in text language format. And I can say that this has become very, very important in my own personal life as a constant reminder that I don't text and drive, and if I've ever attempted to text and drive, the wrist band always reminds me that that's not something that I'm going to do. And we want to do our part to bring awareness to this, to train people to get out of the habit of texting, and we're doing everything we can to bring this to the public's attention.
